The Veiled Index Series
Minnesota, 2142. Life runs according to the system—orderly, efficient, unquestioned. It was never supposed to touch the parts of her life that mattered most. But it did. And it took more than she knew it could.
When a girl is pulled into its inner machinery, she learns the truth: the system doesn’t just enforce order — it rebuilds people into what it needs them to be. Quiet. Useful. Erased.
She was meant to trust it. Now it’s rewriting her.
As the pressure mounts and the rules tighten around her, she can feel pieces of herself slipping away. Truth. Instinct. Will. If she resists, she risks becoming a target. If she allows the system to finish its work, she may lose the last parts of herself that still feel human.
And the system never gives back what it takes.

Draft Two
They were a family once. Now they are two people shaped by loss, moving through the world with the weight of daughters they believe are gone.
A father splintered by guilt. A mother worn thin by sorrow. Grief has separated them, yet something in them turns toward the other — a faint instinct that not everything is as finished as it seems. The system that failed their family expects their silence, their surrender, their acceptance of an ending they never chose.
But even in the ruins, a small, stubborn pulse of purpose remains.
New companions gather around them, drawn by loyalty, circumstance. Some will steady them. Some will complicate the path. All will force them to decide what they’re willing to risk for the chance — however small — of something better.
To move forward, they must confront the system that divided them and unravel the power that keeps their country fractured. Because even if their daughters are gone, the future doesn’t have to be.
And sometimes hope begins exactly there — in the place where everything else has already been taken.

Draft One
Severed from her past long before she understood what it meant to lose it. In the quiet that followed, the system stepped in — precise, orderly, absolute. It shaped her into someone loyal, efficient, unquestioning.
For years, that was enough.
Now, as she rises through the ranks, small irregularities begin to surface — a reassigned file, a brief encounter that leaves an echo, a momentary sense of being near something she can’t place. Nothing she can name. Nothing she’s meant to notice. The system calls them coincidences. She lets them pass.
Obedience has given her purpose. Loyalty has given her place. Yet something faint presses at the edges of her certainty, a quiet pull toward a life she no longer remembers.
To follow it could unravel everything she’s built. To ignore it may cost her the last pieces of herself she didn’t realize were still intact.
The system crafted her into its perfect creation. But even perfection can shift — and in the faint tremor beneath her feet, she feels the first hint of a choice: whether to take back what was taken, or let the ground settle over it forever.
