About Rae Danvers

(Now Bite-Size!)

Person standing in a wooded area, wearing layered tops, surrounded by greenery.

Hi. I’m Rae.

And your name is?

That’s such a unique and beautiful name.

Names carry a lot of meaning, even across cultures. My name means grace if you ask the Scots, wise protection if you ask the Germans, or even ewe if you ask the Hebrews.

I love digging into the roots of why people, places, things—even ideas—are called what they are. I know, I know. You’re thinking, I thought you said this was bite-size. Okay, okay.

I was born in Minnesota but not raised there, at least not fully. My parents were missionaries overseas, and since I was one year old, I went with them. We lived abroad until I turned six, then uprooted everything to come back to Minnesota to pursue adoption. Most people thought I should be thrilled to be back “home,” but I wasn’t. This new place didn’t feel like home at all. I missed the people, the food, the culture.

I didn’t have the words for it then, but that’s how I felt.

Anyways, we tried to adopt. We tried for three years. We’d get close, but something always fell through. Then, when I was nine, some friends of ours were moving and couldn’t bring their foster kids with them—a sibling group of three.

After praying about it, we decided to double our family. We finalized the adoption a year and a half later.

Lots happened between then and now. I was only eleven.

We moved to Illinois, I went to college in 2021, and I dropped out in 2022 (that’s a whole different story). I moved back to Illinois. I might share more in future posts, but those are the highlights.

Oh—right.

As I mentioned, I was a missionary kid. Jesus is the most important part of my life. I know I might lose a few potential readers by saying that. I don’t include any in-your-face evangelism in my posts or writing, but there will naturally be an underlying bias toward my values. I can’t control that any more than you can control that you’re a human being.

If you made it to the end of this, congratulations. Have a gold star 🌟

Thank you for taking the time to get to know me.

Bye for now.

Oh! Also, here’s a short list of things I write about.

  • Missionary Kid life (MK or sometimes TCK for Third Culture Kid)

  • Being an oldest sibling

  • Having siblings with special needs

  • Dystopian novels

  • Losing oneself

  • Finding oneself

  • Using past hurts to build others up

I may add more later, but that’s it for now.

Bye!
